The trade-in alternative for New Jersey drivers
A trade-in is convenient because the dealer does all the work, but you pay for that convenience in the offer. ACar gives you a middle path: private-sale value potential with the work handled for you.
Why trade-in offers come in low
A dealer buying your car has to recondition it, market it and resell it at a profit, so the offer is built around the dealer’s resale margin. That is a fair business model, but it means the trade-in number is rarely the most your car is worth to the next driver.
How ACar is different
ACar lists your car for sale to a private buyer instead of buying it at wholesale. ACar analyzes market data for your specific vehicle and runs it through its pricing models, aiming for a price designed to beat typical trade-in offers while still saving the buyer money compared with a traditional dealer. You approve the amount you receive before anything goes live.
Trade-in vs. ACar at a glance
- Who buys the car: a trade-in sells to a dealer who resells it; ACar sells to the person who will drive it.
- Who sets the number: with a trade-in, the dealer’s offer; with ACar, a market-informed price you approve.
- Seller fees: ACar charges none. Its compensation is built into the buyer’s price.
- Your time: a trade-in is minutes at the dealership; ACar’s listing checklist takes about 10 to 20 minutes, then ACar handles buyer questions and appointments.
- Paperwork: the dealer handles a trade-in’s title; with ACar, you send ACar the title and ACar handles the transfer and MVC filing.
- Your car in the meantime: a trade-in leaves with the dealer; with ACar you keep driving it until it sells.
When a trade-in still makes sense
If you need the car gone today, or you are rolling its value straight into another car at the same dealership, a trade-in can be the right call. ACar is for drivers who can wait for the right buyer in exchange for a stronger outcome.
The ACar selling process, step by step
Most sellers finish the listing checklist in about 10 to 20 minutes, and ACar review usually takes under 24 hours. Nothing goes live until you approve the exact price.
- Vehicle details: start with a VIN, license plate, or year, make and model, then confirm mileage, features, condition, accident history and title status to get an estimated market range.
- Guided vehicle scan: on your phone, capture 7 exterior photos, up to 11 interior and detail photos, two walkaround videos and VIN photos, and document any imperfections.
- Payoff and title: tell ACar whether the car is owned outright or financed, and photograph the title or add your lender and approximate payoff.
- Maintenance history: add oil changes, brakes, tires, major repairs and anything due soon. Receipts help but are optional.
- Identity verification: scan a government-issued ID and take a quick selfie match.
- Test-drive preferences: choose your available days, time windows and where you prefer to meet.
- Review and approve: preview the listing, sign the Seller Listing Agreement and approve the price before it goes live.
