How title transfer works when you sell through ACar
Title paperwork is where many private sales stall. With ACar, the title follows a defined path: you sign it, send the original to ACar, and ACar handles the transfer and the New Jersey MVC filing.
What the seller does
- Photograph the front and back of your title during the listing checklist so ACar can review it before the car goes live.
- When the car sells, sign the seller section of the title, confirm the final odometer reading and send ACar the original title.
- If the car is financed, provide your lender payoff details and authorization so the lien can be released.
What ACar does
- Reviews the title package before ownership can transfer
- Prepares the official NJ MVC title and registration paperwork
- Coordinates lien payoff and release on financed cars
- Tracks registration and plates for the buyer through the order
What can slow a title down
ACar collects title details early so these come up before closing, not after.
- An active loan that still needs to be paid off
- A missing or damaged title, or one with names or signatures that do not match
- A title issued by another state
- A final mileage reading that does not match the title history
No MVC trip for the seller
You do not need to go to an MVC agency to complete a standard sale through ACar. You sign online, send ACar the title, and follow the status in your account.
